He smiled then, the smallest, least defended expression I had seen on his face in years. “I can do simple.”

We walked to the door and stood there a moment, two people at the edge of a decision. I held out my hand. He took it. A bridge does not become safe because you sprint across it. It becomes safe because you walk it often and check the supports.
By early summer, the lavender on my windowsill had decided to live. It leaned into the glass and then into the room with the confident stubbornness of something that understands its own purpose. On the foundation’s bookshelf, the ballerina turned each morning—one wound, one song, enough to remind us that a seam is not a failure; it is proof of an honest repair.

On a late afternoon in July, I locked the office and walked down to the water. The lighthouse beam swept its steady arc. Somewhere down the coast, another light answered. I thought about the word home—how I had believed it was an address, and then a deed, and then a fortress against loss. Now I think home is a set of practices: tell the truth; keep your papers in order; water your plants; answer the phone when a friend calls; be brave enough to set a boundary; be kind enough to keep an open door.

I stood there until the beam swung back, until it washed over me and kept going, as it should. The tide rose. The air smelled like salt and bakeries and a day that had done what it was asked. I turned for home—my home—and watched the harbor lights stitch themselves into a line. Not a cage. Not even a chapter. Just a way forward, lit enough to see the next good step.
